When both parents have to have 2-3 jobs, when teachers are forced to focus on testing instead of the kids, when the kids don’t have third spaces to develop with their peers… yes it’s 100% the system design.

I do not think the children should feel shame or stigma for not being able to read. This is not something that is their fault the deficiencies started long before they could make any choices.

Fifteen years ago, I was reading peer reviewed studies on educational best practice, and realizing that state and national laws prevented me as an educator from following best practice. It hasn't changed. It's easy for me to believe it's on purpose at this point.

I was a library kid, my kids were library kids, my daughter now works at and reads to library kids. We as parents HAVE to make sure our children can read & write.

I also think the government should also put more funding into things like PBS. The reason Sesame Street was so influential was because it provided some early education, especially for low-income families. these kinds of things can help kids get a jump start on topics like knowing the alphabet and counting.
