My mother's side of the family has a long history with America. Because of this, my great-great-great-great-grandparent (or maybe one more "great"—I'm not entirely sure) fled to Germany during that time. As I've gotten older, I've come to dislike America as well, especially as I've become more aware of the harm and destruction we've caused. I absolutely love this song and others like it because of that. In a way, I almost see my ancestors reflected in it. Sometimes I wish my parents had stayed in Germany; I think I would have preferred that. Putting everything aside, it's a beautiful song and it really tells the story of who we are.
