He searched for an eternity before finding exactly the right material in John Fowler's shop in London. Scarlet chintz with brilliant Persian flowers. He raced home with yards of it and covered the entire room. Walls, curtains, furniture, the works. The room held Venetian blackamoors, porcelain leopards, horn snuffboxes from Scotland, brass fish, a plaster cast of her mother, needlepoint pillows she stitched herself, a crocheted afghan, and a rattan chair that belonged on a patio. No relationship between any of it. No curatorial logic. Every single thing was there because she loved it. She ran Harper's Bazaar for 26 years and then ran Vogue. She defined fashion for a generation. And her home looked nothing like fashion. That room remained essentially unchanged for 34 years. She didn't redecorate. She didn't follow trends.
