Dewa Sanzan Shrine is nestled within the lush, ancient forests of Mount Haguro, one of Japan’s most sacred mountains. While you can reach the shrine area by bus or car, we highly recommend - for those physically able - taking the traditional path: a climb up the 2,446 stone steps beginning at Zuishinmon Gate, the spiritual entrance to the mountain. As you ascend through towering cedar trees, take a moment to listen: the gentle murmuring of the Haraigawa River, the rustle of wind through the forest - these are not just sounds of nature, but expressions of the kami (divine spirits). In Shinto belief, which lies at the heart of Shugendo, the ancient Japanese mountain faith, the kami dwell in mountains, rivers, rocks, and trees. Walking this sacred path is more than a hike - it’s a spiritual experience. At the summit stands the Sanjingosaiden (Dewa Sanzan Shrine), where the deities of Mount Haguro, Mount Gassan, and Mount Yudono are enshrined together. This allows pilgrims to symbolically complete the full Dewa Sanzan pilgrimage - even when the other two peaks are inaccessible due to snow. Before approaching the shrine, cleanse your hands and mouth at the temizusha (purification trough) near the entrance. This ritual purification is a way to prepare both body and spirit before offering gratitude to the kami - for life itself, and each day we are given. You may also notice people wearing delicate shime - necklace-like paper talismans inspired by the ceremonial sashes (Yuigesa) worn by yamabushi (mountain ascetics). In Shugendō tradition, these shime act as spiritual barriers, warding off evil and strengthening body and mind during the sacred journey. They are available exclusively at Shugendō pilgrimage sites, including the stalls near Zuishinmon Gate and the Sanshuden, the main hall of the shrine. #Japantrip #DewaSanzan #Dewa Sanzan Shrine #MtHaguro #Shugendo #SpiritualJapan #JapaneseShrines #Shugendo #SacredMountains #JapanTravel #NatureHealing
