Interesting thing is that current popular Japanese words like "yabai" and "maji" or "majide" were never used by my parents/grandparents. These words started gaining popularity as new J-slang in the late 1990s and early 2000s, and only within the last 20 years or so, have become accepted as pretty standard conversational words. "Yabai" used to be a word used in the criminal underworld, so that's why most older Japanese never used it, but then it became "cool slang", and now almost everyone uses it, young and old, and it can mean just about anything "extreme".

Dropping the i at the end (yaba instead of yabai) feels like a verbal exclamation mark….see also atsu (instead of atsui)
