There’s an interesting discussion on these structures in The Explorers Podcast. These aren’t necessarily unknown to archaeologists, they just haven’t been considered very interesting— no monumental sculptures, no historical inscriptions, no gold, so they’ve been considered not worth the trouble to excavate. Nowadays there’s more interest in understanding the daily lives of people and their utilitarian structures, so archaeologists are reconsidering the importance of these sites.

They're all set up on top of the mountains, what if it's mountains to us but for them it was islands? if they are extremely old then maybe they are from the time when Sahara was mostly ocean. That could explain why there are no structures on the flat land near it. Just a guess!!!
