Originating primarily among working-class suburban youth, the term "gopnik" is widely believed to trace back either to the pre-revolutionary City Society of Supervision (GOP in Russian acronym) or the slang verb "gop-stop," which refers to street muggings. In the economic collapse following the fall of the USSR, millions of teenagers and young men found themselves without social mobility, clear career prospects, or stable family environments. Gathering in courtyards, stairwells, and around concrete benches, they forged a distinct street subculture defined by territorial loyalty, a strict hierarchy, adherence to rough prison morals, and an unmistakable aesthetic. Central to that aesthetic was an almost sacred devotion to Adidas tracksuits. This obsession originated with the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow, where the Soviet national team was officially outfitted by Adidas. Because Western consumer goods were scarce, the three stripes instantly turned into a status symbol representing physical strength, international quality, and high athletic achievement. In the chaotic nineties, the market flooded with cheap counterfeit sportswear imported from China and Turkey, often comically misspelled as Abibas or Adidos. Tracksuits became daily wear because they were affordable, durable, and practical for physical confrontations. Coupled with leather flat caps, heavy square-toed leather dress shoes, cheap beer, and roasted sunflower seeds (semechki) shelled while squatting flat-footed, the three stripes became the ultimate uniform of post-Soviet street power. Street robbery, particularly targeting mobile phones, was quintessential gopnik territory during the late 1990s and early 2000s. Early mobile phones were genuine luxury items, and taking one was both lucrative and common. A classic confrontation rarely started with direct violence; instead, it involved psychological intimidation known as "razvodka." A group would approach an isolated passerby asking deceptively harmless questions like "Got a cigarette?" or "Let me make a quick call from your phone, mine died." If the victim handed over the device, the gopnik would either walk away claiming ownership, provoke a petty excuse for an altercation, or vanish down a dark alley. Those who refused or displayed obvious fear often faced physical intimidation or outright assault. If a gopnik encountered someone reading visual novels, the reaction would depend entirely on the context and the decade, but almost always skew toward aggression or mockery. The gopnik worldview drew heavily from Soviet prison culture, which enforced extreme conformity, traditional machismo, and hostility toward anything perceived as weak, eccentric, or unconventional. In the mid-2000s, an anime enthusiast reading visual novels on a handheld console or phone would instantly be branded an "informal" or an outsider. Such subcultures were seen as easy prey, lacking physical prowess and violating street masculinity. The victim would be accused of indulging in childish nonsense or worse, with the reader being verbally mocked, shoved around, and pressured into surrendering their device. In later years, as internet culture and gaming permeated all social layers, the dynamic softened. Many younger peers in post-Soviet working-class neighborhoods played video games themselves, blurring old tribal boundaries. While a solitary reader in an isolated courtyard at night might still be targeted purely opportunistic crime, the ideological hostility faded as the original gopnik culture largely dissolved into nostalgic internet memes, parodies, and mainstream pop culture.
