On 18 August, WIRED reported that Meta had run ads for Kromix, an app that turns a photograph of a real person into pornography. The Tech Transparency Project found them. One showed a woman resembling a prominent US politician, then the same face in a pornographic video. They were aimed at men only. Meta took them down after WIRED asked, and said most of that account's ads had received 10 or fewer impressions. Almost nobody. That cannot be tested. Meta counted impressions; its public archive publishes a different unit, an estimate of how many accounts in the EU saw an ad at least once. Meta prints that for every ad, including the ones it removes. The Kromix ads carried a tagline:
On 18 August, WIRED reported that Meta had run ads for Kromix, an app that turns a photograph of a real person into pornography. The Tech Transparency Project found them. The Kromix ads carried a tagline: "Unleash Next-gen AI Magic". Searching the ad library for that exact phrase returned, on 21 August, about 37,000 results by Meta's own counter. We took the first 2,000 in Meta's own ordering, most impressions first, and opened every one. They come from 999 pages, every one an unverified personal profile, and on 1,993 the audience Meta records is men. Meta removed 1,624 of them and names the rule each broke: adult sexual exploitation (1,123), adult nudity and sexual activity (1,099), adult sexual solicitation (904), human exploitation (185), and on twenty, child sexual exploitation, abuse and nudity. That name is nearly all that is left. Removal blanks the format, the title and the destination on 1,622 of them. The count stays: one estimate per ad, never a total, because one account may have been shown many. The lowest is 29, the largest 8,071. One that was live for 48 minutes reached 3,347. The 376 Meta did not remove still show their fields: one title, one format, a link to an app install. Meta has named no rule on any of them, and 21 were still running when the record was taken on 21 August. By 25 August, 15 of those 21 were still up.
