We were told in Afghanistan, for every 3L of water we drank, to put 1 sachet of electrolytes in the 4th. That was in 50°c sweating like mad! Doubt 45 mins in the gym requires it!

So unless you’re a professional athlete training multiple times a day you basically don’t need them

pots, low blood pressure, migraines, a hefty sweaty workout or diarrhoea are the only reasons i could think of as good enough to have an electrolyte drink.

I dropped creatine, electrolytes & supplements because my bloods are fine - now I’m not bloated 24/7 and can still leg press 300kg so turns out I didn’t need them 😅. It’s all about £££

As a menopausal woman and have a hyperactive thyroid I sweat so much - I then get migraines - I find one electrolyte drink a day helps me with the migraines and feel better

Yes! This drives me mad. I have POTS & Addisons so I really need to look for electrolytes with high sodium because my body can’t retain it very well & it’s so hard to find electrolytes that have the required amount of each element within them! So even though electrolytes are very trendy atm, the majority of them have hardly any electrolytes in them at all 😂 chances are that people are feeling ‘amazing’ because of all the extra water they’re drinking, rather than the actual electrolytes.

Glad that the world is catching up when it comes to electrolytes! Time to call out the electrolyte industry👏👏👏

I’m one of few that need to have salt (low BP and POTS) - however salt and cordial is what I have! As electrolytes don’t have enough salt!!!

As a distance runner of 32 years, the only time I’ve taken electrolytes is during ultramarathons or on a long run on a particularly warm day.

Electrolytes are only needed when you’re doing heavy exercise (literally like running a marathon) and you’re sweating out salt in immense amounts. Water is an amazing thing. It’s also very very cheap

Well damn… never thought of it from this side. I’ve drank electrolytes everyday for over a year, this was because of chronic fatigue and was advised to drink it daily to help basically for myself energy. Maybe I need to take a step back from it after watching this

maybe there's an issue with understanding - call me naive but I actually didnt know electrolytes was just salt. I just thought it was something to do with energy, but never actually looked into what it is. giving it a fancy name must have confused more people than just me

I have said this for yearssss too. Also People taking Cornish salt, pink Himalayan salt etc like it was doing anything different than regular salt. the amount of trace minerals in there are negligible, so what is the point!

This is taking average population nutrition data and wrongly applying it to trained populations. Yes, the average sedentary person already gets enough sodium from diet, so electrolyte supplements are unnecessary for a normal 60 min gym session. But that doesn’t mean electrolytes are “pointless.”
It’s the same mistake as saying “most people don’t need protein powder” and then using that to argue athletes don’t benefit from it. True for the average person, irrelevant for the trained population.
Once you move into above-average activity levels—regular endurance training, long cardio sessions, heat, high sweat rates—you’re no longer in the same physiological category. You are actively losing sodium and fluid at meaningful rates (often 0.5–2+ L sweat/hour), which can impact plasma volume, thermoregulation, and performance if not replaced.
So the real point is: electrolytes aren’t universally necessary, but they are absolutely context-dependent. Gym-goers and endurance athletes are not the “average” population being referenced here.
