@thetimes: Will Oxford Street actually become car-free? More than a kilometre of Oxford Street will be pedestrianised this year, Sir Sadiq Khan, the mayor of London, has confirmed. The shopping hub will be closed to traffic from the western end of Selfridges to just beyond Ikea in Great Portland Street — about 0.6 of a mile — after the mayor signed a “mayoral direction” in February. The speed with which the mayor is pushing forward with the plans has surprised analysts. Cars will be barred as soon as this summer, and buses, taxis and bikes will be diverted later in the year. It’s too long of a stretch to expect people to just walk it - might need at least to have a bus/ cycle lane

Ridiculous idea. So I, with mobility issues, will not be able to, as now, get a bus direct to my favourite stores. Thank you Mr Mayor. In any case, Oxford Street is quintessentially London and the red buses and black cabs are an important part of the scene.

Won’t work. So all of the companies who do shop fit outs and usually park outside the building they’re working in won’t be able to park outisde anymore, which means it will take longer to do the work in the store, which means the shops will have to spend more time and money to get these shop displays up which means they will need to shut the stores for longer which means they will need to put the prices up of the merchandise that they’re selling to make up for the extra time they’re losing out on

Personally I don't drive in Central London, but I'm still waiting for an answer to where the traffic is going to go. They're not sitting in a London traffic jam for fun and will need alternative routes.

What about tradesmen? When things need repairing ? The 15 minute zones have already made it impossible for people to get work done! RIP Oxford street
