The ADHD debate is loud right now. But the biology of midlife women is barely a whisper in it. 😲 A documentary #thegreatadhdmyth questioned whether ADHD is real. Scientists pushed back. Organizations filed complaints. Everyone picked a side. And in the middle of all of it, nobody stopped to ask what happens to the attention and executive function systems of a woman whose estrogen is becoming erratic… DYK that Estrogen directly modulates the dopamine, norepinephrine and serotonin systems your prefrontal cortex runs on? So, when it becomes volatile in perimenopause, those systems become harder to regulate. That’s not a controversial claim. That is neuroendocrinology. The women who are being diagnosed with ADHD in their 40s after recognizing their children’s symptoms in themselves are not a social media trend. Some of them spent 20 years compensating for a neurodevelopmental vulnerability inside a hormonal environment that made compensation possible. Then that environment changed. The majority of research we have available was built almost entirely around boys and younger populations. So, we’re trying to answer a midlife woman’s question using tools that were never designed with her in mind. 🤦🏾‍♀️ A change in your cognition is not a character verdict. It is a clinical signal. If your brain stopped working the way it used to work, that deserves more than being told you are overwhelmed. Save this, share this with your overwhelmed friend, and follow for the full series. (This is education, not a diagnosis. Decisions about your health belong with your own clinician.)
