WORLD WEATHER NEWS GREECE WILDFIRE Sadly, the wildfire crisis across southern Europe continues. After the devastating scenes we've been reporting from France, Spain and Italy, Greece is now facing another extremely serious wildfire situation. Since Friday, a huge wildfire has been burning across Boeotia and western Attica, with the flames spreading rapidly through vegetation and towards the coastal community of Porto Germeno, around 60 km west of Athens. Latest Greek reports describe the fire around Porto Germeno as displaying extreme fire behaviour, with the area becoming one of the most critical fronts. PORTO GERMENO UNDER THREAT The fire began in Boeotia before crossing towards western Attica and reaching Porto Germeno. Flames have entered populated areas, with reports of homes being damaged or destroyed, as firefighters desperately try to protect communities. Conditions became so dangerous that some residents and holidaymakers had to be evacuated by sea. Greece's 112 emergency warning system issued repeated evacuation messages as the fire advanced. There have also been reports of a firefighting vehicle being destroyed by the flames, showing just how intense and unpredictable conditions have become on the ground. A HUGE SMOKE PLUME Satellite imagery has been showing the enormous amount of smoke being produced by the wildfire. Winds and atmospheric currents can carry wildfire smoke hundreds or even thousands of kilometres away from the actual fire, so the smoke plume can eventually affect air quality and produce hazy skies well away from Greece. The figure of around 55,682 acres (about 22,534 hectares) burned is circulating, although the final burned area may change considerably as satellite mapping is updated and the fire perimeter is assessed. WHY THESE FIRES CAN SPREAD SO QUICKLY Hot temperatures, very dry vegetation and wind are a nasty combination for Mediterranean wildfires. Once a large fire becomes established in pine forest, enormous amounts of heat can be released, creating powerful convection above the flames. That can produce rapidly changing fire behaviour, long-distance spotting as burning material is carried ahead of the main fire, and sudden changes in direction, making the job of firefighters incredibly dangerous. And despite the incredible work being done from the air, firefighting aircraft cannot simply "put out" a wildfire of this size. Their water and retardant drops are mainly used to slow the fire and support crews working on the ground. Greek reports say hundreds of people have already been moved from threatened areas, including evacuations from coastal communities as the flames approached. This is another sobering reminder of just how brutal the 2026 European wildfire season is becoming. Our thoughts are with everyone affected, those who have been forced from their homes and, of course, the firefighters, pilots, emergency services and volunteers working in extremely difficult conditions.
