@pitochk: Radiation is one of humanity’s greatest discoveries - and at the same time, one of the most dangerous. By controlling it, we are able to build power plants that are hundreds or even thousands of times more efficient and cleaner than many alternatives. We can break through Arctic ice and reshape parts of the planet. It also helps us treat diseases that once seemed incurable. However, we must always remember how dangerous it can be. You cannot see or feel it, yet the damage it can inflict on a living organism is hard to compare with anything else. Unwanted radiation, by the way, is still a major problem in many fields. One of the global challenges yet to be fully solved for interplanetary travel is protecting astronauts during long flights and while colonizing other planets. It is also unfortunate that we still haven’t learned how to fully deal with radioactive waste. Square kilometers of land remain contaminated for centuries. Technically, we do have methods to reprocess and enrich these materials again, but due to economic inefficiency and the creation of additional waste, this approach often loses its practicality. Radiation fascinates us - humanity has discovered something our senses were never designed to perceive, and learned to use it.
