@misinformedmedia: Smart meters record electricity usage in 5-30 minute intervals and automatically send data to retailers. A smart meter records your electricity usage and then feeds it back to your retailer (us). Basic meters are being replaced with smart meters. This is because basic meters can’t support new technology. So, rule changes have been made by the Australian Energy Market Commission (AEMC). Most homes and businesses in Victoria already have a smart meter. Since June 2025, energy retailers have replaced basic meters with smart meters. As per the new rules, older meters will eventually be phased out. These new rules do not allow opt out provisions.
In Queensland you’ve always had a choice of monthly or quarterly. Also in parts of Queensland there is only one provider so you don’t have a choice.

I don't have a smart metre but origin straight up gaslit me on the phone telling me I had a smart metre when I asked them to take a reading instead of guesstimating my bills.
trust me if I had a smart metre and my electricity bill was accurate I'd be paying 1/3 of what I do on electricity.
instead they just lie and guesstimate how much to charge me instead
