@katja5236: Elvis during karate training (from the Gladiators DVD) 🥋 ~ Master Kang Rhee ~ Elvis trained with Master Kang Rhee in Memphis, Tennessee, from 1970 to 1974. He said that Master Rhee had a good reputation and had been highly recommended to him by his former instructor, Ed Parker from California. During those four years with Master Rhee, Elvis—like all the other students—chose an animal name by which he wanted to be addressed in the training area. After initially choosing “Mr. Panther,” the name was later changed to “Mr. Tiger,” since the name “Panther” was associated with political connotations at the time. ~ Black Belt ~ Elvis trained with the other students in regular training sessions. Discipline during class was so strict that Elvis enjoyed the same freedom to train as the other students, without the usual pressure from fans. In 1973, Master Rhee awarded him the 7th Dan, and he occasionally had the opportunity to test and promote students of lower ranks himself. ~ Elvis the Instructor ~ Elvis was an instructor in the Pasaryu Karate Association under Master Kang Rhee and trained alongside karate greats such as Master Rhee, a former Korean grandmaster, and Bill Wallace, the world middleweight champion. Once, during a training session, he was teaching a female student a self-defense technique in which the victim was supposed to scrape the attacker’s shins. After Elvis tried several times to get her to perform the move correctly, the desperate student struck his shins so hard that he nearly collapsed from the pain. She had learned it. Younger students in the class were often afraid of Elvis. When he heard about this problem with a nine-year-old boy, he took him aside, spoke to him privately, and gave him his own watch engraved with “Elvis Presley." Elvis’ close friends refer to those four years as his golden years — years of peace and spiritual fulfillment. There are photos documenting those four years. It's nice to see the whole video broken down like this unfortunately Even though Elvis was quite proficient he obtained what we call an honorary black belt second dan or whatever he knew all the theory but never really had to demonstrate them at the proper level of proficiency, still looked cool though. I always loved the part in the movie this is Elvis where you go es everybody was kung Fu fighting and the edited with it on stage as well was great.
