Plutarch tells a famous story about Julius Caesar passing through a small Alpine village and being asked whether even a place like this had rivalries for political power. Caesar replied: “I had rather be the first man among these fellows, than the second man in Rome.” Elsewhere, Plutarch says Caesar effectively abandoned the pursuit of becoming Rome’s greatest orator because of his “ambition to be first in power and arms.” That desire for primacy seems to run through much of Caesar’s political career. That does not mean Caesar had planned from youth to become dictator of Rome although maybe he did. But he appears to have known something that many people struggle to define even now….what he wanted. And once you know the destination, decisions become much easier to judge.
