The essence of Buddhism, and what distinguishes it from all other religions, lies in this: While every religion speaks of an external, great God, Buddhism teaches that if there is such a God, that is your Buddha-nature, it has never left you. Therefore, all religions seek that most authoritative God, while Buddhism focuses on returning inward to the inherent nature within us. This is Buddhism. Many people say that believing in any religion is the same-it's all about doing good. Of course, even without religious belief, universal human values dictate doing good. But the preciousness of Buddhism lies in its return to one's true nature. Learning Buddhism is not a hobby, let alone a fashion, nor does it mean that learning Buddhism has any merits. The purpose of studying Buddhism is to understand the universal truth.
