Many of these tree-planting services are greenwashing schemes because they plant the same species in a grid-like pattern, which is ecologically harmful. Biodiverse forests are significantly more fire-resistant since varied species create natural firebreaks, different canopy layers trap and retain moisture, and trees in diverse ecosystems develop stronger defense mechanisms through shared root networks and soil microbiomes. In a single-species plantation, one disease or fire can wipe out everything because nothing is buffering it. Biodiversity also isn’t optional for wildlife since animals and insects depend on plant diversity to survive, so these plantations don’t restore ecosystems, they just replace them with tree farms. Real reforestation means planting native, mixed species the way nature intended, not rows of the same tree for a carbon credit.
