At the time, many people justified their assumptions about him based solely on his appearance, mannerisms, and perceived femininity. Some insisted he "must be gay" simply because he was effeminate. The poem was written from the imagined perspective of a grieving sister responding to those conversations at her brother's funeral. The line "he was not gay" reflects her attempt to defend her brother against the assumptions being placed on him. It was meant to confront the dangerous mindset that equates femininity in men with sexuality, and the violence that can come from that assumption. To be clear, the piece is not saying it would have been acceptable to kill him if he were gay. No human being deserves violence, humiliation, or death because of their sexuality, appearance, or self-expression. #creatorsearchinsights
