@bookswithamanda212: Colors, patterns, and textures are so beautiful in clothing. Colors, patterns, and textures are not abnormal simply because it’s not the “Chic French” standard that you’ve created as “normal”. You’re not just talking about Americans when you say ignorant things like this, you’re also talking about every other country that embraces color, textures, patterns, creativity, and uniqueness. It’s no coincidence they tend to be black and brown predominant in their population. #usa #usa_tiktok #culture #clothing #pickme

Her assessment of French clothing isn't even accurate. I go to France frequently bc I have family there. I always do a lot of shopping specifically because the patterns and colors are bold and different than what I see in the US. (not to mention we have a lot of the same department stores, like H&M and Zara, that literally sell the exact same things in both places.)

Sociologist here. Cultural norms dictate what’s “normal”. That’s why we call it “normal” - they’re of the norm. Thank you for doing the good work - I love seeing sociology being applied beautifully! 🤩😍

I don’t always like American individualism but in the case of fashion it’s so great. I feel like the “American” way of dressing is so broad and all the choices people make are valid and morally neutral

It’s like…listen to yourselves, colors, patterns and textures. What is the point of all the techniques humans have developed over the course of humanity if we aren’t supposed to enjoy it?

Me in Paris wearing a hot pink dress because I care more about feeling pretty in what I wear than “fitting in”.

Ew, beige minimalism is overrated. Give me whimsy, give me fantastical, give me cute, give me maximalism, and give me color.

the french are such a crazy group to ride or die for because a) they don't really like anyone else and b) no one else really likes them 😭 and America by and large is not a france-adjacent country anyway

Mind almost every major fashion house’s “signature” prints can be trace back to actual tribe’s traditional print; a lot it just muted in color!

It’s also treating French “neutral” colored dress as a general standard and not a trend. France and the rest of Europe themselves have a long history of colorful and patterned clothing, and it’s only really in the mid 20th century that you start seeing the influence of brands like Chanel in creating this standard, bland “neutral” aesthetic. “Chic” modern French fashion is just that— it’s modern, it’s a trend. The trends elsewhere are different.
