@katgetsmoney: we didn’t used to have bread 😔 & we lived through multiple ice ages, almost died out multiple times, split into various species…. So many facinating things happened and it’s all recorded in our DNA, not our little tech boxes (yet) 😉📲 In all seriousness life wasn’t easy for most of our history. It was just challenging in a different way than it is today. Remembering the history honors our ancestors and teaches us SO much. People > Empire #History #anthropology #prehistory #Science #hominid

Humans have had more or less modern brains and cognitive capabilities for over 200,000 years and have only had writing for about 6,000. Prehistory is VAST compared to the entire written record.

My conspiracy theory is that we started writing way earlier than we have evidence for.

I think we literally have 1% idea of how complex these societies actually were. I don’t mean fancy tech. But tens of thousands of years in places like dogerland or zeelandia they’re now underwater would’ve produced complex belief systems and hierarchies and sooo many stories about the world. Imagine how may Gilgamesh, Caesar’s or great Khan type epics we’ll never ever know

It's mind blowing to me the stuff we figured out before we thought to write anything down. Fire, cooking, agriculture, spears, bows and arrows, tattoos, boats. Through all that time, no one thought to write anything down? We have over a million years of stories lost to time.

My greatest hope is that after death somehow we get even a split second of knowing everything about everything. I just want to understand for a little bit, have everything make sense and all the stories told.

I wonder how many times humanity tried to urbanize but left no evidence because wood structures don't preserve very well.

My personal conspiracy theory is that pre-historic humans had very advanced civilizations, but those civilizations died out for a number of reasons and their cities were lost to time. If we look at ancient sites that are only a few thousand years old and see how worn they are, then it's totally possible for huge civilizations to rise and fall in the span of 100k years and leave little to no trace.

Pre history is so fascinating to me. Living with the gang. Doing things based on the seasons. I’d be in my element. Only problem is that I had brain surgery so I actually wouldn’t have lived if I was born during that time

Sam Kean wrote a rly good book that told stories from the perspective of people living in prehistoric periods, doing a great job of humanizing them within the context of their time. The book is Dinner with King Tut. It’s mainly about experimental archeology and how obsessed we are with understanding who we were in the past

It blows my mind how little we actually know of the past. It’s estimated we have a fossil record for, AT BEST, 1% of all species that have ever lived.
