@ostra141: I don’t know, Mom… maybe scrolling is the problem? We are culture. The moment culture starts fading, we’re in trouble. Scrolling is replacing reading - articles, media, websites built around actual text. At this point, the only real move is to create content that works in a scroll, but still carries meaning - video, or images you can “read.” That’s why we’re seeing a shift away from just pretty photos and luxury-life aesthetics. Deep down, we know that if scrolling becomes only surface-level, the internet - and culture with it- just dissolves. The rise of educational content didn’t come out of nowhere. Maybe we can still hold the line. Thanks to the Wayback Machine, 16% has been recovered, and 56% is archived before it disappears. We’ve known for thousands of years that preservation is essential to keep culture alive. But beyond physical artifacts, we also have to preserve the culture of the internet - because a huge amount of data today is at real risk of disappearing. The fact that people are scrolling a bit less doesn’t mean we’re safe. The web is vanishing, and only part of it is being saved. So content is becoming less durable - and slowly, we’re losing our culture. #sociology #internetarchive #reading #website #culture
