Booktok hasn't heard of it because it isn't romance/romantacy. Sorry someone had to say it.

Pulitzers aren’t the “Booktok’s most popular” award

things like the pulitzer used to be how you'd hear about books worth reading in the first place

People genuinely seem to think that BookTok is the end all be all of artistic merit when it comes to writing and the books they’re suggesting are Heated Rivalry (loved the book series but it’s not winning any awards any time soon)

people should read whatever they want, *but* be self aware enough to realize they're only seeing part of the whole picture.

isn't... the Pulitzer list... one of the places to hear about this book for the first time? if they followed bookshops or prints I'm sure they'd hear about it? 😅

Following indie bookstores and libraries has been hands down the best way to get books recs that are a little outside the same 12 books that everyone is talking about online…

This is also why i genuinely like Goodreads reading challenges. It has me trying out books I wouldn’t have picked on my own

This is why I love book clubs! I hear about so many different books, usually outside my preferred genre, and different perspectives.

I also helps when you read more than one genre. I get recommendations in every genre except biographies so I see more of a variety.

I had a regular from our bookstore (she’s in indies WEEKLY) say she never saw Angel Down anywhere and I’m like “GIRL IT WAS ON OUR FRONT TABLE FOR A MONTH AND A HALF IN A BIG ASS STACK - WE HOSTED THAT MAN”

The pulitzer has never been one of those awards that care about mainstream popularity

Also authors can submit themselves to the Pulitzer and it has nothing to do with popularity

I work I'm Acquisitions at an academic library so I'm getting daily emails, and newsletters from publishers. I also attend many of their webinars, so a lot of the Pulitzer winners and finalists were on my radar, but not EVERYTHING. I really can't stress how many books get published every week and even when your job is to know what's new and popular, you're not going to know it all. I can also say that the majority of the nonfiction and literary fiction out there is not getting mainstream traction on booktok.

If you read literary fiction you probably heard about Angel Down late last summer or early fall at the latest. It was extremely buzzy bc it’s really unusual/ambitious AND just a good read.

How can I tap into the book world to get recommendations outside of booktok? I don’t have any connections to that world.

Angel Down by Daniel Kraus was selected as one of The New York Times 10 Best Books of 2025. It did not come from nowhere. It is a fever dream of a book though so is his other book whalefall that ironically to your marvel point is starring Josh Brolin and just got great reviews at a festival premiere. Find the lit fic side of booktok they are out there!
