I saw a video of a girl whose mom would say in front of her to other people “my daughter is such an easy kid. She’s so sweet and kind and incredibly helpful. I don’t ever have to worry about her behaving bad” and she said that when she heard her mom speak about her that way to other people it made her unconsciously be those things.

I was so bad at math. Horrid. Barely passed. I told BOTH of my girls since they were little that they are math geniuses like Mommy. Told them so much how great they were at math and “wow! You have the math gene!” They BELIEVED it and my oldest is in advanced AP calculus in Senior Year in HS!!!!! It works. Totally. Btw I still can’t do math LOL they haven’t caught on LOL

Being a parent is so hard. You make mistakes and then feel guilty forever. Feels like you are not doing it correctly.

So very true. Something adorable we have always done with my daughter since she has turned 4 is, she would pretend to sleep in front of us. Whenever she did that I would tell my husband "Oh she's sleeping, it's time to say all the wonderful things about her that we love. We would name off all the good things she's done all day ect. and she would smile so much, she's 6 and we still do this. It has made a huge impact on her self esteem.

I’ll be honest, from the time I can remember at least, I obeyed my parents so much because I truly was scared of them. Scared of disappointing them, being on restriction or having things taken from me. I feel like parents are taught this is wrong style of parenting but it worked for my brother and I. We both turned out really good and now I look back and really appreciate my parents not letting me do some of the stuff I wanted to at certain ages. Especially seeing how kids who had really lenient parents turned out. There’s definitely a balance but my dad used to tell me, he had to make some of the decisions because it wasn’t fair of him to think that I as a teenage would make the right ones in certain situations. And he didn’t want me put in those situations. I think kids who lack boundaries really struggle in the real world too, with real jobs.

The worst was being yelled at for spilling things, I have a memory of being yelled at at 3 years old for dropping a sippy cup

I always tell my 4-year old: “you are a smart and sweet boy. That’s why I get upset when you do (A,B,C). Because it doesn’t make sense for such a kind young man to act that way”

FYI parents, this is very early on. Don’t expect this to work in one conversation at 13 or 14.

I’m so proud of myself because my 4yo spilled a cup of water across the whole dining table and it got on me and everything. They looked at me to see how I would react, and I took a big breath in then said “it’s ok baby it was an accident” and they went “we all make mistakes sometimes don’t we” 😭😭😭😭 and I knew I was doing ok. Cuz I would have got yelled at as a kid.

Not to mention, the way that we speak to our children becomes their inner voice, their inner critic, the way they speak to themselves, for the REST of their lives.
