@jake.pnw: These Giant Scallops Vanished From Oregon‼️😱 The Oregon Coast used to be home to giant scallops that are now frozen in the Astoria Formation as fossils. And here’s the crazy part: scallops still exist today, but these exact species do not. These fossil scallops lived around 15–20 million years ago, when parts of the Oregon Coast were underwater in a very different marine environment. Over time, the ocean changed. Water temperatures shifted, sea levels moved, currents changed, and the seafloor habitat they depended on slowly disappeared or transformed. So they probably didn’t go extinct from one massive disaster. It was more likely millions of years of environmental change that slowly wiped out the exact species. Modern scallops are basically their living relatives, but the giant scallops from the Astoria Formation are long gone. #Learning #Education #nature #animals
