@drrachelbarr: Accepting correction is a skill, and most people will respect you for admitting when you’re wrong, because it demonstrates personal maturity. You’ll meet the occasional ar*ehole who’ll milk it, but that’s life. Most people will meet you with grace. So, practice it.
I'm very sensitive and it's led many of my colleagues to assume I can't handle criticism or feedback... It's the absolute opposite, I'm so grateful whenever someone puts their time/effort into figuring out the holes in my work! It's a joy!

I am also going to go out on a limb and say that a lot of US people (myself included) were mocked by our teachers when we had the wrong answer in school - and I graduated high school in 2003, so a lot of American adults probably experienced this. So it's not just social media, I don't think.

Being wrong is a learning opportunity. It's impossible to know everything. And that's fine. We were often wrong in history bur we learn every time. It doesn't make you lesser or anything it's okay, it's normal. Try to learn to deal with that Ego. It's not you who is wrong it's the information first available in your brain, that's it. And that is interchangable. Be flexible.
What is problematic is looking at the world based on your OPINION and ignore contradicting information from reality. This blocks you from learning and eventually sooner or later you end up doing the wrong thing and make the wrong decisions because you refused earlier learning opportunities. But you can change that.

The paradox and the dilemma is that many extremely successful people like Elon Musk never ever admit their wrong and yet we keep rewarding them with untold wealth

I think framing being wrong as natural and in some way positive or having a positive outcome is a nice way to set out. If more people did that it would help A LOT.

It’s hard being corrected. I hate being wrong. At the same time, it’s an opportunity to learn something from it. When we get defensive, we deprive ourselves of the opportunity to be educated. Thank you for giving your experience with it too!

it has much to do with their parents. sensitivity and defensiveness are learned young, it takes a lot of work to undo it, and most ppl simply won't need to undergo that effort. fortunately it can be broken out of. humility is the greatest relief one can give themselves

This is an important mindset in software development, to let go of your ego and be willing to be wrong. Don't be afraid to try ideas but also don't hold on to them irrationally when it doesn't work or if someone has a better approach.
