As a dispatcher for the fire department “They’re still in there!” Is always going to be followed up with “how many?”

my fire fighter husband was listening to this story and that woman irritated his spirit now I have to listen to the history of fire fighter operations.

"They" has been acceptable for singular and plural for decades if not over a century, especially where specificity is unknown or difficult, such as in, ya know, an emergency

What an oddly specific set of circumstances that did not apply to the conversation you were originally having with her!

“They” has always been used as both singular and plural. At least for my entire 28 years of life

As a firefighter myself let me just make it perfectly clear that one of the very first questions we ask is "how many people are inside"

politics aside for a second, it's wild to picture anyone thinking that fire department arrival protocol is "listen to the exact grammar of the first scream you hear"

"They're going to assume". Now would that be 1 firefighter, 2 firefighters or more ma'am?

…firefighters have a protocol for checking and clearing a building. They don’t need information from people to know how many people are in the building. They have to check just in case the person is wrong or didn’t know

When you said, "The firefighters would assume you mean multiple people", my FIRST thought was, "Well, a well trained first responder would probably ask exactly how many people before going to look for more." right before you said it too. I genuinely can't believe people get so wrapped up in what-ifs, they can't look at them from more than one angle.

I noticed she used “they” to describe the firefighter(s). I think she really should have been more clear how many firefighters there were since counting people in these situations is so important
