Reading of him my take is he was a tough, straight down the line and VERY VERY disciplined commander who expected professionalism from his men. the time meant certain punishments which we would disaprove of now.

I think Wellington would admit that Moore led the way in the peninsular campaign. Marlborough is a military legend.

An additional (supportive) anecdote. In the 1860s a very old British military survivor as asked for his opinion of Wellington. The old soldier stared into space for a moment, then observed "well, we didn't go hungry!" Wellington was not popular with his artillery & changed their commanders several times in the peninsula. At Waterloo, prior to the start of the battle, Cpt Ramsey's response to Wellington's " halloo" sums up the general feeling of the semi-independant artillery, controlled as they were by the Board of Ordnance. Wellington seems to have lacked the "common touch" which may have had it's origins in the family's early insecurities. Wellington's "family" (staff) tended to be selected from aristocratic families e.g. Lord Fitzroy Somerset (later Lord Raglan).

Thank God nobody mentioned Bernard Law Montgomery.
Too many people go to Monty when asked about who is best without knowing just how bad he was

Wonder who was the best dinner companion? Napoleon or Wellington? Wellington likely kept the better table, as Napoleon wasn’t that into food. But what about the conversation?
