As a sociologist, this is one of the biggest struggles in the field. We’re great at critiquing the system and uncovering these things, but none really offer solutions. So engaged sociology is an attempt to fix that. But this is definitely a conversation that needs to pick up more steam! Thank you for your voice!

I share the same critique of modern leftism in general. I've asked gender studies professors similar questions to "who protects the women/children/lgbtq people who we acknowledge are targets of male violence in an abolitionist system?" and I've never ever gotten an answer

Thank you! We do really need this. And yeah maybe the far futurist left serves a need for many to escape from the present since it can be so bleak. But isn’t really integrated w the now.

The fight against tipping culture is another good example! They're actively hurting workers for some ideal that we don't have yet.

their main argument is that a majority of crime is perpetrated by low-income people like a third of it. And so they draw the conclusion that it's a class issue and the environment is a changeable variable that they focus on. Instead of thinking that, it's more likely that aggressive behaviors dont lead to economic prosperity

Restorative justice only works with both parties (mostly the party harming) need to agree to it.

i sometimes feel bad (?) i guess being pessimistic about the future, but realistic there is waaaaayyyyyy too much work to be done for me to be overly excited or making promises about said future if that makes sense.

I often parrot it to my peers as "you cant be post an issue, while others are actively being affected by said issue."

This is so incredibly true. We don't know what works. We don't try to find out what works. We don't try to build it. I know it's human nature to want to tell everybody else what to do, judge everyone else,

if we keep on deconstructing without building we'll end up with nothing in our fight against everything

I'm a survivor of an attempted family annihilation and I really struggle with the ideas of abolition and restorative justice. When the offender was up for parole I asked one of my favorite leftist creators for their thoughts on how such a situation would be handled under their model. They ignored my comment but interacted with every other comment on the video. It left a really bad taste in my mouth.

It's easier to be morally superior and destroy, then to build, because building takes self awareness and accountability.

I'm a mental health worker who stopped thinking like this when I saw how many of the problems my youth face would be instantly resolved by their families having more money, stability and resources. Only WE can create the world we want. Housing for all is a great goal and definitely something I agree with. It's also not immediately feasible and needs to have several short term fixes and organizations on the ground floor building to that goal.

yes!! i don't identify myself as an abolitionist because while addressing mass incarceration and the punitive measures the US criminal legal system uses is important and very much a necessary thing, it does not change the fact that individuals are still being oppressed by the carceral system now. so while the fight for a better future is ongoing, there also needs to be services, resources, and support for those who need it now.

Yes! One step forward does not mean we are at our desired destination but we are still one step closer than we were before - and that matters.

There’s a stigma around the mutual aid that does exist, be it community food programs, harm reduction, warming/cooling stations, too. Like everyone deserves care and help but not like THAT! It’s a weird disconnect. Like everyone wants to just skip ahead and not actually work to fix what needs fixing right now. They want a magic wand solution.
