THE TEMPLE ARCHIVE — RECOVERED REEL 096 [ ZELDA OCARINA OF TIME — SEVEN YEARS FOOTAGE — RECOVERED 16mm MATERIAL 1989 ] He went in a boy. The footage came out with a man. In 1989, a continuity supervisor named Ren Ishikawa working freelance in Nagano was hired onto a production she later described in a private notebook, recovered from a storage clearance in 2014, as "the only job where I was told in advance that continuity would not apply, and to document the discrepancies rather than correct them." She was given a single instruction sheet with one line underlined: "the actor will change during filming. this is expected. do not recast." What Ishikawa documented over eleven shooting days was 29 minutes of Ocarina of Time footage built around a single actor who, according to her daily continuity photographs, aged approximately seven years across an eleven-day shoot with no visible transition between any two consecutive days. Wardrobe confirmed the costume was let out twice during production to accommodate the actor's changing frame. Makeup denied applying aging effects. Ishikawa's notes: "I photographed him every morning before call time. Day four and day five do not look like the same person. Nobody else on set found this remarkable." The Zelda pilot aired on a cable channel in Nagano, March 14th 1989. Runtime: 29 minutes. Broadcast at 3:33am. A viewer wrote to the station describing the film as feeling longer than its runtime — "I checked the clock twice. More time had passed than the tape allowed for." Ishikawa's continuity photographs from the shoot were archived with the production's other materials. When the archive was catalogued in 2003, the photographs for days four through eleven were present. The photographs for days one through three were missing. Nobody has located them. #lostmedia #zelda #nintendo64 #ocarinaoftime #retrogaming
