Under-responsive caregiving blocks are a toughy. Theyre hard for me as a therapist because I have to get what’s called “buy-in,” from parents — I need their desire to reconnect with their children to be stronger than their fear that Im going to judge them or tell them that they failed (spoiler alert, I want to help parents not judge them!!). So when it comes to parents with under-responsive caregiving blocks, it can be hard to get that buy-in to work with the process of family therapy bc theyre already usually more disconnected, detached individuals. So its tough, and it can give me a window into the child’s experience as it feels sometimes that I am having to chase down parents, repeat myself, be ignored etc. All in an attempt to get them to even join therapy let alone participate in it! This process ofc isnt impossible with these kinds of blocks, again its just delicate and tricky. This is why its so important to work with therapists who invest in trainings, supervision, peer consult groups, staying current with research, have a steady practice of reading up, and best case scenario, are doing their own self-reflection practices. Family therapy is so incredibly complex and more often than not means holding AT LEAST two generations of trauma all in one room. You need to know what to prioritize, how to maneuever with empathic blocks, and most importantly, how to keep the space safe. On that note, under-responsive caregiving blocks do track with narcissistic abuse and can certainly create emotional neglect wounds. So if you have a parent with under-responsive caregiving blocks, look out for this. I plan on releasing supplemental resources on this hopefully in the next week or so. Can you tell i can talk about this endlessly?!?!??
