It protects the mare during birth by covering those tiny hooves so they don’t cause injury on the way out. Their texture is soft and spongy and look almost finger like and feel like rubber. Within a few hours after birth, those “slippers” start to dry up and wear off as baby finds their legs and starts exploring the world It’s one of my absolute favorite little details to watch for during foaling season… Have you ever seen them?!
