@dr.adam_christman: What do you think for dogs and cats? Spay and neuter? WHEN to do it? or ovary-sparing hysterectomy and vasectomy? Same goal? Maybe. Same outcome? Not even close. This isn’t about being trendy. It’s about evidence, long-term health, behavior, cancer risk, and what we need to know when clients are asking us. At Fetch, this is exactly the kind of debate happening in the hallways, in sessions, and over drinks…real conversations that actually push veterinary medicine forward. 👉 If you want CE that challenges how you think (not just checks a box), this is where you need to be. 📍 Music City Center | Nashville 📅 May 28–30, 2026 🎓 Up to 17 hours of RACE-approved CE Register here: Secure your spot at Fetch Nashville https://shorturl.at/3QJ6Y Let’s talk about it— Where do you stand? #VeterinaryMedicine #VetMed #SpayNeuter #VeterinaryLeadership #veterinarian @dvm360

Well, since I’ve seen a frenchie who the owners want an abortion without the spay as she’s too little to have puppies (she’s a year old), an XL bully puppy who’s biting the family and humping everyone at 6 months and someone selling all their stuff to pay for their dog’s pyo surgery over the last week- I think we need to remember that population control and behavior is all super important as well….

it should be revisited. there are studies supporting both sides but deeper research should be explored for hormone preserving sterilization

As a cancer researcher in 2 leggers… a resounding YES! UC Davis just did a great summary/analysis on data. Definitely see improvements in cancer rates for some breeds. Go Doc 👏🏽

Yes, especially for big large breed dogs. Also, they should educate large breed dog owners about a gastropexy.

My large breed dog will not be spayed until she is at least 18 months to 2 years old I waited until my Great Pyrenees was almost 2 years old to spay and she is doing great at 10 1/2 years old. Unfortunately there are a lot of irresponsible people in my area which means there are a lot of unwanted puppies.

From a foster and shelter volunteer I have mixed feelings. I love knowing my foster dogs aren’t going to be having babies, but wonder about the long term impact of being fixed at 3-4 months old.

Where I live if they pick up your animal it gets spade and you pay for it or don’t get your pet back.

I thought part of the reason we spay and neuter is to prevent cancers. wouldn't leaving the testicles and ovaries/uterus still make the susceptible? also wouldn't female dogs still have the risk of mammary cancer and pyometra?

My vet won’t fix large breed males until they are three. Females until after their first heat.

Completely depends on who owns the pets and if they are able to be responsible and prevent accidental breeding. Personally, I think it’s beneficial, but due to the state of over population, backyard breeding and accidental litters, it’s not a viable option for *most* pet owners at this time.

My boy is cryptorchid, one testicle never dropped. I planned on getting him neutered either way, but everything I understand is I don’t really have a choice but to do it for his long term health

I thank my lucky stars that my vet offers both vasectomies and Uterine Sparing Spays. When I needed to neuter my 18 month old Cavalier, he asked me a couple behavior questions and we determined a vasectomy was best. However, my current 1 year old male poodle x will need a full neuter. Interested in your thoughts.

I don’t think any dog should be spayed/neutered before 6 months, it stunts their growth. My female small dog was spayed at 7.5 (almost 8) months, great ideal weight & body condition! She is currently doing well as a 1 year old Cavalier/Shih Tzu cross

My dog, Jonas, received a Vasectomy. We traveled all the way to Kutztown Pa, more than an hour away, for this procedure. OSS and VS are the future of veterinary medicine. Dogs can’t reproduce and they get to keep their hormones. I believe it can be done at any time and you can later decide to do a full spay or neuter if needed later.
