The woman killed in the Dec. 17 officer-involved shooting in Strasburg died from multiple gunshot wounds, a state medical examiner has found. A Strasburg police officer shot Melissa R. Tompkins during an incident at a hotel, according to information from the Virginia State Police. Tompkins, 40, of no fixed address, died at a hospital after succumbing to her injuries, police have said. The Office of the State Medical Examiner ruled Tompkins’ death a homicide, Northern District Administrator Jennifer Starkey says in an email on Wednesday. Starkey does not indicate where Tompkins sustained the fatal gunshot wounds. The medical examiner can release the cause and manner of an individual’s death to the public and the media. The manner of death can be homicide, suicide, accidental, natural or undetermined. The Virginia State Police is investigating the officer-involved shooting at the request of the Strasburg department. Neither agency has released the officer’s name. Strasburg police Chief Wayne Sager said last week the officer has been put on administrative leave during the investigation, as per department policy. State police have said that Tompkins attacked the Strasburg officer, took his baton and struck him in the head. The officer fired his weapon, striking Tompkins, according to the state police news release. Sager posted a statement on the department’s Facebook page on Saturday, asking for the community’s patience while the investigation continues: “This past Sunday (Dec. 17) one of our officers was forced into a situation that all law enforcement train for, but hope and pray to never experience,” the statement reads. “Unfortunately, despite all efforts to de-escalate the situation through the use of non-lethal force, our officer was left with no alternative than to discharge his firearm while being beaten in the face and head with a metal baton. “Tragically, this resulted in the loss of the life of another individual,” the statement reads. “The officer is currently recovering from a broken nose and serious lacerations to his head and face.”
