At night, the Sun is beneath our feet, but neutrinos produced by nuclear fusion in its core barely notice the planet in their way. These almost massless particles interact so weakly with matter that trillions of them pass through your body every second, and most continue straight through Earth without hitting anything. Deep underground, enormous detectors can occasionally catch one of these elusive particles. By collecting many neutrino events and reconstructing the directions they came from, scientists can build up an image showing exactly where the Sun is, even when it’s on the opposite side of the planet. So this glowing spot isn’t ordinary sunlight traveling through Earth. It’s essentially a neutrino portrait of the Sun, created from particles born in the solar core and detected after passing through thousands of kilometres of rock. And because neutrinos escape from the Sun’s core almost immediately, while photons can take an extremely long time to work their way outward, neutrinos give astronomers a remarkably direct glimpse of the nuclear reactions powering our star. We didn’t look up at the Sun. We looked through the Earth to find it. Neutrino image of the Sun credit: Super-Kamiokande Collaboration, Japan. Image credit: R. Svoboda & K. Gordan (LSU). I share fascinating science content, feel free to join me for more.
