@subwaytakes: Episode 699: Songwriting is not something that you necessarily get better at the more you do it!! @Rostam #subwaytakes #interview #songs #songwriting #nyc
Most songwriters tend to say you get better as you keep writing. Ed Sheeran definitely says this.

Hard disagree. Writing the structure of a song can certainly get better. It’s why the second or third album for a band is usually their best

As a songwriter, you have to accept that 99% of everything you create you’ll end up hating later because it’s kind of garbage. However, 1% is truly fantastic. You just have to accept that 99% will be garbage and create as much as you possibly can so, you can get to that 1%.

He’s absolutely, 100% wrong. It’s been known that you have to write hundreds of bad songs to write one good one, and you write more good ones the more you write. Simpler is sometimes harder to write and requires more skill and time

There is definitely a fall off. How many artists do you know that wrote their best song ever, after 30 years in the business? Not many.

I can only think of a handful of artists whose songwriting stayed consistently strong over decades. Most songwriters have a golden period of about 10-15 years with everything outside of that paling in comparison. For every David Bowie, you have a dozen Bonos and Robert Plants who shine bright for a moment, only to run out of fresh, exciting ideas and coast off their former songwriting glory.

I think the ability to execute your ideas gets better and the craft gets better, but you don’t necessarily get better at generating the essence of a song after a certain point

He’s right. A lot of bands strike gold with their first couple albums. They try to recreate that “lightning in a bottle” and they fail to do so.
