The issue is that as technically grounded and as deep as the fighting mechanics are, Virtua Fighter lacked presentation in the sense of storylines, storytelling, lore, world building etc, which made it seem bland to the mainstream audience, hell there weren’t really many endings in the series. Don’t get it twisted, it deserves its flowers for what it gave us (it clearly walked so Tekken DOA and other 3D fighters could run), but even just a tiny bit of emphasis on story would do it so much justice. SNK games in their early days leaned heavily on plot and lore despite also having deep mechanics.

It has always been popular in Asia arcades. People flocked to play it while others lay idle. And each virtual fighter installment that came out has groundbreaking graphics for their time. This series plays like a real martial fight instead of an anime fight.

As someone who loves VF I got to admit that there's more cope for this series than any other fighting game. "Virtua Fighter doesn't need a story, or a compelling setting, or even good character designs..." this is the same series that kept Dural, an already boring design, as a final boss for every game. if it was any other series people would call it out for what it was, lazy. 🙏😔

if I remember right, in preparation for the first game, Yu Suzuki had his staff take up martial arts to gain a first hand understanding, hence the strong emphasis on realism, which leads to it being highly respected but not necessarily popular. I think the lack of anything resembling a story is what hurts it. we can play with these characters and discover how deep their mastery of their style goes... but who are they?
