Former HVAC/R tech and building engineer here. That amount of buildup usually points to poor filtration, filter bypass, return leaks, or years of neglect. Cleaning removes the dirt, but if you don’t fix the source, it’ll come right back.

Looks like he never changed his filter, cheaper to be aggressive about filter changes, more if you have a pet, and run a couple of upright air purifiers the stand up portable ones n clean n change the filters as needed. I do this imo air very clean. Furnace guy couldn't believe how clean it was. 😁

Pull the filter and insert a piece of cardboard the same size. Saves the filter from getting the dust on it AND will nearly double the suction to your vac.
