One of the hardest parts of building a service-based business isn’t finding clients. It’s learning to become comfortable with uncertainty. For many divorced former tradwives, that’s especially difficult. We’ve been through enough instability that our nervous systems naturally want certainty. We want to know exactly how next week will go. Exactly how much money will come in. Exactly what the future holds. I understand that. It’s one of the reasons some women choose a traditional job, and for many people, that’s absolutely the right decision. But when I unexpectedly lost my 9-to-5 job, I realized something: There was less certainty there than I had believed. Last week is a perfect example. At first, it looked like it was going to be a slow, stressful week. Then, halfway through the week, one of my regular clients booked a large project. A week I thought would be financially scary suddenly became a solid week. That’s the reality of many service-based businesses. The goal isn’t to eliminate uncertainty. It’s to build enough confidence in yourself that you can keep showing up, marketing your business, serving people well, and trusting yourself to figure out the next step.
