Purpose of the Literature Review, Part 1 | Ep 3 A well-executed literature review is systematic, critical, and purposeful. The literature review accomplishes several foundation tasks. 1️⃣ Establishes Context: You must understand where and how your research topic fits within the broader field. A literature review situates the study historically, conceptually, and theoretically. Search for the foundational articles that established the baseline for your study. These will become apparent during your keyword search and when you read several different articles. Dig deep to discover the foundational studies that will support your topic. Focus on the definitions or relationships of the your concepts as it relates to your topic. Be able to create a conceptual model that will visually depict your constructs. Your study will require you to identify and apply scientific theories that are the guiding force behind your study. 2️⃣ Identify what is known and know about your topic: A doctoral-level literature review synthesis establishes findings and reveals areas where knowledge is incomplete, contradictory, or outdated. By doing so, you’ll be able to identify gaps in your literature. Then you must ask yourself, how will you address those gaps? These sources you are evaluating and analyzing on your topic must be 5-10 years current. There must be adequate an amount of literature that exists on your topic, or else it can become very challenging trying to tell your story on your topic. These articles must also support your topic and also be relevant. Please dedicate quality time to do this or else your progress may become increasingly difficult to connect the dots on your topic.
