A baby spends about 9 months growing in the womb, which is time counted inside the womb. After birth, we count age outside the womb. Since life inside and outside the womb are different stages, age is counted from birth. You can see this with premature babies: if a baby is born at 6 months, we start counting their age from the day they are born—we don’t wait for the full 9 months. That’s why a baby who has been born for 6 months is called 6 months old.
