as a mentally healthy person, the default is boredom. life IS ups and downs. it has to be.

“My demand for happiness is so extreme that I’m joyful at my pain” -Saint Francis of Assisi. In other words, do the hard inner work of dealing with your emotional or situational pain, and you will find happiness. The joy of dealing with pain is knowing a better life is coming. You CAN do it. 💛🌱

My therapist tells me a lot that happiness is a destination on a road map. You can visit it, and the more you visit it the easier it is to get back to. But it’s just that, a place you visit. Like every other emotion.

“I think it’s so foolish for people to want to be happy. Happy is so momentary. You’re happy for an instant and then you start thinking again. Interest is the most important thing in life; happiness is temporary, but interest is continuous.” - Georgia O’Keeffe 🌀

And that’s why capitalism works. It makes you buy your happiness one fleeting moment at a time. And to stay happy you “must” consume more. And nobody is getting paid enough to do that so they burn you out and keep you in a system they created by alluring you to be “happy”. Crazy marketing on the 1%s part. But being content is absolute. I’m pretty sure that’s the point of becoming a monk- just to be. Not to be any one thing but to feel everything and nothing at once, all the time.

Depression is a disconnect from self and placing more value in the external scenarios than your internal connect. Emotions are meant to flow and be experienced. Not dwelled on.

I feel like this perspective really allows space for self-compassion for ppl with depression or anxiety. I have often jokingly thought that my social anxiety would probably have been beneficial back in a tribal setting where fitting in and being part of a community was literally life or death!

There’s a book called “A Short Introduction: On Happiness” that talks about how the Greeks supposedly viewed happiness as an overall average across one’s life, as opposed to fleeting moments of joy, and that’s stuck with me for years and years. I can be sad or angry or lost on any given day but my life is happy on the whole, and it looks a lot like gratitude to the day to day decisions that led me here

There's also a difference between like... delight happiness and thankful happiness. Being thankful and content is a manageable long-term state but it's not what most people want when they want to be "happy."

happiness is a verb, and I say this as a person with lifelong depression. it takes effort and work and practice, as all things do. laying in bed alone all day is easy, and it feels good... in small doses. going out and being around people and making connections, ESPECIALLY if you're mentally ill or generally neutodivergent, is hard work, BUT it's as good for you as eating a balanced diet and exercising. it's MENTAL exercise. that's the takeaway I've had to come to through therapy and lots of effort.
