Stop guessing which preposition connects to your noun and throwing away your O-Level English Editing marks! Today we are breaking down a core grammatical structure from the syllabus: High-Frequency Noun-Preposition Categories. Noun-preposition collocations are fixed, conventional pairings where a specific noun must be followed by a particular dependent preposition to connect logically to the rest of the sentence. Unlike prepositions of place or time, dependent prepositions are dictated entirely by the noun itself. In editing tasks, errors frequently occur when writers substitute prepositions based on literal translation, spatial logic, or incorrect root-word assumptions. Here are the highest-frequency categories tested by examiners and how to spot them: Collocations with "FOR": reason for, demand for, respect for, desire for, need for, and reputation for. If an exam sentence asks, "What was the reason of the sudden delay?", you must change "of" to "for"! Collocations with "IN": increase in, decrease in, interest in, belief in, rise in, and failure in. Nouns describing movements or trends in measurable areas strictly take "in" (e.g., "a steady increase in demand"). Collocations with "WITH": relationship with, difficulty with, trouble with, contact with, and agreement with. If an exam line reads, "He had great difficulty at the assignment", you must correct "at" to "with"! Collocations with "TO": solution to, access to, invitation to, reaction to, damage to, threat to, and key to. Never fall into the direct translation trap of writing "solution of"! Memorise these fixed pairings, save this video for your O-Level revision, and secure those Editing marks! #OLevelEnglish #SEAB #OLevels2026 #SgExams #StudyTokSG #EnglishEditing #GrammarTips #Prepositions #SingaporeStudents #SGStudyTok @thesiliconshifu
