The legend of Korra messed up Tophs character, old woman toph is fine but this younger version we see here she would have never been a police chief that makes no sense for her character and especially with the way she was treated as a child she would have tried to been a way better parent to both of her kids. the writers did not understand her character.

I always saw it as Lin took her job too seriously and felt her sister should be more responsible bc of who they are. And Toph being a self made orphan wasn’t the most strict parent and was essentially lenient with both of them , she doesn’t seem to be overly hard on Lin. I also feel like that’s why she calls Toph chief not bc she doesn’t see her as a mother but bc she sees herself as more of a soldier than a daughter. Toph should’ve gave her more tho.

You guys still view Toph character as the same 12 year old rebellious kid instead of an adult shaped by decades of life experience. Toph becoming a police chief actually makes sense when you remember she always valued structure when it served a purpose. She literally created metalbending schools and trained others herself. She hated being controlled, not responsibility itself. And her parenting flaws make sense too. A lot of people who grow up overly sheltered overcorrect with their own kids. Toph gave Lin and Suyin too much freedom because she didn’t want to become her parents. That’s realistic character progression, not misunderstanding the character.

I know people are mad they made Toph a bad parent but i’m glad that the new series wasn’t afraid to mess with their characters. It would make sense she’s a bad mom. She ran away from home because she was sick of overparenting, and became too permissive of a parent herself. She was always cold a bit of a smart ass, so when tasked with being the marker of rules she suddenly had to distance herself so far her kids never felt any warmth.

Toph grew up controlled by her parents rules and lived unhappy until she carved her own path and found her own happiness. so for toph....happiness is not something to be found from parental approval. she loved her girls so much that she put no expectations on them and wanted them to carve their own path just as she did. it only backfired because both girls acted out in different ways to gain their mothers attention

she didn't technically apologize she just admitted she wasn't a great mother, she never actually said she was sorry for being a bad mother or any of her specific actions. she makes it seem like being a bad mother just was who she was and not a result of the choices she made which is a bad apology. not saying I hate her character overall I accept this character I like was/is still canonically a bad mom bc sometimes ppl are legitimately bad parents
