Alan Thompson's son Austin shot and killed his son James in their home in Raleigh, North Carolina, on Oct. 13, 2022, then killed five people in a neighborhood shooting spree that also injured a woman and a police officer. Thompson visited him at the hospital and testified today "it was weird, because I'm looking at him and he would just stared straight ahead." "His brain was fragmented, and there was a board on the wall, and he said he saw animals on the wall. And it's just weird when you see your son, you always have known him, and he's, he's saying these, these crazy things like that," Thompson testified. "I just had to walk out room a couple times because I just didn't understand it at some some points." He said he feared Austin would "be a vegetable" and told doctors to "pull the plug on him." "And they said, 'We have to do everything we can, because we've seen miraculous things happen,'" Thompson testified. Now, "are you able to have fairly normal conversations with him?" Wake County District Attorney Lorrin Freeman asked. "Yes," Thompson answered. "You still visit him frequently?" Freeman asked. "As much as I can," Thompson answered. "Bring him books to read and things like that?" Freeman asked. "Yes," Thompson answered.
