Over time, this material can harden into a small lump that we call the bean. While it may seem minor, if left unattended it can lead to discomfort, irritation, restricted urination, or even behavioral changes under saddle. Routine sheath cleaning is essential to maintaining your horse’s health and comfort. During cleaning, the penis should be gently extended, and the urethral opening carefully checked. The bean can typically be felt just inside the urethral fossa and removed manually using clean, gloved hands and a suitable lubricant. It’s important to work slowly, gently, and never force anything. Your horse’s safety and comfort always come first. If your horse is sensitive or resistant, sedation by a veterinarian may be the safest option.
