I'm a gen x and honestly I didn't feel any fear. Honestly, I didn't care that I was alone because I liked the peace and quiet.

I was born in 1976 and I was never left home alone until I was 10 or 11 and no other kids I knew were either. I think this whole "we were left home alone" story has become exaggerated over the years. For most of us, when we got to be 10 or so, they started letting us be home by ourselves for an hour or two at a time but not much more than that, and not when we were very little.

Want to know why we haven’t “aged”? We were fully grown by 10.

I can’t lie, it was the best time ever. It felt like freedom. It was the only time I could what I wanted and not be bothered. I HATED when parents came home 🤷♀️

The Babysitters Club books taught me it was completely normal and profitable for middle schoolers to look after younger kids.

My favorite time of the day was coming home to an empty house, making myself a bologna sandwich and chocolate milk, then turning on the TV to watch my favorite cartoons. For a couple of hours a day no one bothered me. It was fantastic.

It wasn’t just the afternoons. Many of us had to make our own breakfast and get ourselves off to school, alone in the morning as young as first graders.
