Have you ever committed a crime… and accidentally left the one piece of evidence that would destroy your life decades later? On October 17th, 1978, 61-year-old Carroll Bonnet was found brutally stabbed to death inside his apartment in Omaha, Nebraska. The scene was disturbing. Blood covered parts of the apartment, and investigators believed the killer had gone into the bathroom to wash blood from his hands before escaping. But in doing that… He made a huge mistake. He left behind fingerprints and palm prints on the bathroom surfaces. Police thought the case would be solved quickly. They searched every fingerprint database they had. Nothing. No match. The killer had apparently never been fingerprinted before. To make things even stranger, Bonnet’s car was stolen after the murder and later found abandoned in Illinois. Inside the apartment, investigators also found a handwritten note that read: “I am leaving this crime with one clue. Find it yourself. Die, pig.” But despite the fingerprints, the note, and the stolen car… The investigation reached a dead end. The case went cold. Years passed. Then decades. Carroll Bonnet’s family waited more than thirty years without answers. In 2008, detectives decided to reopen the investigation. By then, fingerprint technology had changed dramatically. Instead of searching local files by hand, investigators entered the old fingerprints into the FBI’s Integrated Automated Fingerprint Identification System, known as IAFIS. Less than five hours later… The computer returned a possible match. The fingerprints belonged to Jerry Watson, who was already serving time in an Illinois prison for burglary. Detectives dug deeper. Among the original evidence, they even found an old classified advertisement with the words “Jerry W.” written on it—something that had meant nothing back in 1978. Investigators obtained Watson’s DNA. It matched DNA recovered from the murder scene. In 2011, after more than three decades, a jury found Jerry Watson guilty of first-degree murder. On October 17th, exactly thirty-three years after Carroll Bonnet’s body was discovered, Watson was sentenced to life in prison. The fingerprints had been waiting at the crime scene the entire time. Technology just needed thirty years to catch up. #TrueCri#TrueCrimet#CrimeStorys#ColdCaseM#SolvedMysteryok
