My parents always said I was “too open” with my kids because I was always blunt and honest about about uncomfortable topics, including sex. My sons are 24 and 16 and I haven’t regretted it.

as a teen boy, yes. my parents have always been the "because I said so" type that expect me to respect them just because theyre my parents regardless of how they treat me. ive learned that in order to avoid arguments, I have to tell them what they wanna hear regardless of what I want to say. ive learned how to get around every single restriction they have set (they only want me to have 30 mins of screen time a day and won't give any reason why other than "because I said so"), etc. ive tried to tell them things about my life, but i doubt they know my favorite color or favorite food because they dont ever take time to listen to me. ik no one cares, but I felt like typing this so here ya go

Ruined the entire high school experience and didn’t teach me how to make connections with other people in real life everything was just over Snapchat sometimes I wish I can go back in time and redo my entire life from high school on

Parents— a lesson to you from a researcher of political repression and resistance: surveillance, censorship, restriction will always lead to resistance. People always find a way. This applies to all levels of authority from governments to parents. It is important that you teach how to engage more than you are limiting access. Educate your kids on the dangers of spending too much time online. Have these conversations from a position of mutual respect and EXPLAIN YOUR REASONING !!!!! Abolish the phrase “because I said so” especially when setting rules. Rules that have no justification will either be broken or will break your child. Encourage critical engagement with authority, you want them to think for themselves not follow orders
