Honestly, people should probably be asking that question about spousal bond versus parent child bond of marriage counselors as well. There seems to be a few people who have them swapped.

Even if an adult child never has the opportunity to go into therapy with their parent or parents to resolve issues of harm, I think it’s hugely supportive of them to watch this video and get a sense of validation and understanding of what good looks like in family therapy.

I wonder if some therapists let them all come in unprepared so that the therapist can witness the dynamic for themselves in a "safe" environment - it feels a bit irresponsible

It is truly heartbreaking how many bad therapists are out there who actually harm their patients. I wish the therapy field would address this directly, like by removing bad actors from therapist associations or by revoking licenses. Patients should be able to trust providers 😢

When family therapy is handled incorrectly, it can retraumatize. My sibling ended lungs and I have all been pulled into family therapy just to be abused.

That may be a wonderful approach when estrangement is due to an neglectful/abusive or unavailable parent that resulted in estrangement. What if the factors I identified above are not part of the estrangement/LC/NC CURRENTLY?
